Dog Adoptions

CCHS operates two separate, distinct adoption programs for dogs.  Meet our lovable, adoptable dogs in the Adoption Gallery.

Our adoptable dogs reside in foster homes and can be met by appointment or at adoption events (not all dogs may be present at events).  If you’re interested in meeting a particular dog, please complete an adoption application on the dog’s profile page.  Once your application has been submitted and received, it will be reviewed by an adoption counselor and you can expect to hear back within 48 hours.  Applications are processed based on the order in which they’re received and the most suitable match for the dog.  We may have dogs and puppies in foster homes who aren’t yet available for adoption, so please check back frequently!  Descriptions of each program, adoption fees and services provided are detailed below.

CCHS rescues all breeds of dogs and does not discriminate based on breed.  Each dog that we rescue is temperament tested and approved for placement into a loving home.

Foster Program

Dogs available through CCHS’s Foster Program are those that our organization obtains from Contra Costa County Animal Services (the public shelter) in Martinez or Pinole. These dogs are made available to rescue groups for any number of reasons (e.g., needing medical attention, needing behavioral attention, not enough interest from the public, elderly, etc.). Animal Services tries very hard to find homes for all of these dogs, but the sheer volume of animals surrendered on a daily basis makes this a very difficult feat for them to do by themselves.

Foster Program dogs are placed in CCHS foster homes and given the care needed to re-adjust to life in a home. Once ready, they are placed as available for adoption to the public.

  • Fees and Services Included:
    • Dogs under 6 months: $350.00 (effective March 1 , 2020)
    • Dogs over 6 months: $250.00 (effective March 1 , 2020)
    • All of the dogs available through our foster program are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and given age-appropriate vaccinations for their new home. Oftentimes, further medical care has been given, such as flea treatment, heartworm treatment, de-worming, stool samples, or specific surgeries. On average, CCHS invests over $300.00 per dog, which includes their medical treatment, food, treats, toys and other needs. Your adoption fee helps to offset some of these costs and ensures funding for other dogs in need of care through our program.

Re-Homing Assistance Program

CCHS’s Re-Homing Assistance Program is a service provided to the public when they can no longer care for their companion cats & dogs. Oftentimes, a situation arises in which an animal must be re-homed, and after exploring all other options, CCHS will post a photo and biography of the companion animal available for re-homing. These are not animals in CCHS foster care; rather, CCHS acts as a third-party advertising method for the animal.

All Re-Homing Assistance Program animals are spayed/neutered and current on their vaccines. If you are interested in adopting a dog available through CCHS’s Re-Homing Assistance Program, please contact the dog’s guardian using the email or contact number provided in the dog’s biography.  If it seems like a good match, a meeting time will be set by the guardian, who will make the final adoption decision.

Adoption fees are determined by the animal’s guardian. CCHS typically recommends an adoption fee of at least $50-$100.
