Every year, millions of companion animals are surrendered to public shelters in need of new homes.

The number of animals we can save depends on loving foster homes.

Each year, approximately $250,000,000 in taxpayer money is spent to house and euthanizeBD07353_.wmf (11752 bytes)homeless animals in California alone.  As of April, over 154,911 dogs and cats have been euthanized in California shelters in 2009, to the tune of over $75,000,000.

SB 250, The Pet Responsibility Act, is a fiscally responsible and humane step towards reducing the pet overpopulation crisis in California.   It simply requires that companion dogs be altered, unless their guardian obtains an unaltered dog licence, when licensing their dog with county animal services departments.   It also requires that outdoor or free-roaming cats be altered by their guardian or caregiver.

Contra Costa Humane Society supports SB 250 and asks that you consider lending your support to this important legislation.

Moving may be inevitable for many, but what happens to beloved companion animals when one is unable to keep their home?  It's key for one to develop a plan that includes one's animals and to consider all possible options before abandoning animals at overburdened municipal shelters.  Please click here for options on renting with your animals, re-homing your animals, and other short-term solutions.   This information is critical in ensuring that your beloved companion animals are able to remain part of the family.

Paws for thought... Just this year alone, 3-4 million animals will be euthanized - more than a quarter-million each month, 405 each hour,       one every nine seconds.

A devastating number of unwanted and unplanned animals are born each year without the guarantee of a forever home.  Each home found for these animals means one less home for an already-alive shelter animal facing euthanasia.  If you could do something simple to help end this needless destruction, wouldn't you?

PLEASE spay, neuter, adopt and spread the word!

We can all make a difference in the lives of these animals.
