At Contra Costa Humane Society, we want to be sure every animal has the most compatible human companion. Some of the animals that we help have special needs or particular temperaments, so we work hard to ensure that we assess your needs also. CCHS lists adoptable animals through two different programs. In our Adopt-a-Friend Program, available animals have been pulled from local animal shelters and placed in CCHS-approved foster homes until such time that they can be adopted. These animals are spayed/neutered before adoption, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. The second program is our Referral Program (see below), where CCHS acts as an advertising resource for members of the public who have to re-home their furry friend. Please check our listings to the left to find all of the animals currently available for adoption.
First, please follow the links to the left to browse the dogs and cats we have available for adoption. Should there be an animal in which you're interested, please download and complete an Adoption Application for that animal and send it to our office via email, mail or fax. Once received at our office, the application will be reviewed, and if approved, we will contact you to set up a time to meet the animal of your choice. Please note that for Adopt-a-Friend animals, we do not allow same-day adoptions. Please be prepared to meet the animal and spend time discussing a potential adoption with all household members that evening.
Are you looking to find a new home for your animal? If so, consider letting CCHS help you... Referral Adoption Program Changing human companions can be very stressful for animals. Therefore, our first inclination is to ask you to look at the situation differently: is there any adjustment you may be able to make to allow you to keep the animal? If the concern in behavioral, have you spoken to or worked with a behaviorist or trainer? If it is not possible to keep your animal, we will try to help you find a new and loving home for your four-legged friend. For community members throughout the Bay Area, CCHS offers a Referral Adoption Program. If you're unable to keep your animal long-term but can keep him or her during the time it takes to find a new home, this program allows you to post a picture and biography of your animal on our website, as well as other large animal advertising sites (for example, Petfinder.com, 1-800-Save-A-Pet.com, etc) for a $25 fee (for CCC residents). Parties interested in your animal will be asked to complete an adoption application, after which CCHS will do all initial pre-screening of potential adopters and pass along any qualified candidates' information to you, allowing you to make the final decision as to the right new family for your companion animal. The amount of an adoption fee for the animal is determined by you. Please note that this is a referral service only and CCHS acts simply as a third-party resource for those looking to rehome their animals. Descriptions of the animals available through CCHS's Referral Program are provided by the animals' guardian. Please note that Referral Program animals have not been personally evaluated by a CCHS staff member. Please call (925) 279-2247, ext. 303 for more details.
